HEAD COACH
Ted Misztela is a certified Coach 2, who has over 16 years of experience. Ted has studied under world renowned coaches such as Bob Brett (coach of Boris Becker / Goran Ivanesicic / Maran Cilic) and Louis Cayer (captain of the champion British davis cup team ). His players have won over 25 Atlantic titles and two of his players have broke the top 15 in national rankings over the past five years. Ted was a top ranked junior player and has played and coached at several national level tournaments. He also received a college scholarship to play tennis in the U.S.
Some of Ted’s current players include a number one U-12 girl, a number one U-14 girl, a number one U-16 girl, a number one U-18 girl, a number 2 U-16 boy, and many other kids ranked in the top five of their age in Nova Scotia.
HEAD COACH
Jamie Power is a certified Coach 2, whose coaching career started at age 17. He has held positions with City of Halifax, St. Georges Tennis Club, The Waegwoltic, Northcliffe Tennis Club, The Courtyard and Tennis Nova Scotia before forming Headstart.
A passionate player, Jamie started competing in provincial tennis events at the age of 14. By the age of 18 he has competed at Nationals and was ranked #1 in U -18 singles in Nova Scotia. Jamie has continued to compete in Atlantic Canada ever since and has achieved the #1 singles and doubles rankings in Nova Scotia on more than one occasion. He is extremely proud to have won 1 Men’s Doubles Title (with Ted Misztela) and 2 Mixed Doubles Titles (with Amy Brookman) at the prestigious Nova Scotia Open.

Kevin's successful background as a competitive junior tennis player within Tennis Canada's circuit has helped him develop a deep understanding of the game.
Having grown up in Sydney, Nova Scotia and being a recipient of Kidsport bursaries, Kevin recognises the importance of providing access to sports opportunities for young athletes.
With over 15 years of coaching experience, Kevin has achieved remarkable success. He currently coaches multiple junior players consistently ranked in the top 10 in Nova Scotia, showcasing his ability to nurture talent and foster their growth.

Liam Macdonald is an accomplished tennis coach with over 15 years of experience in competitive coaching and player development. A graduate of Shepherd University in West Virginia, where he competed in NCAA Division II, Liam combines his expertise as a Tennis Canada certified Club Professional 2 with a strong passion for high-performance training. He specializes in preparing junior and adult athletes for elite competition and has a proven track record of success. Liam has helped numerous players compete at a national level and has coached some of Nova Scotia's top 10 juniors. His dedication, strategic insight, and commitment to excellence make him a sought-after coach for players aiming to elevate their game.

I have been currently working along side with Tennis Director and owner Dennis Dobrovolsky At The tennis Swing School Vaughan Ont. where I have been heavily involved in the grass roots junior tennis program development. As well as acting tennis director for hosting OTA junior Rookie Tournaments. Plus developing and coaching Rogers Rookie juniors players in the OTA Tournaments. Where our players have achieve and won multiple times at tournament level Plus The tennis Rocks Tournaments.
My new venture is now beginning the Head Start Tennis Club. I am welcome with a inviting professional team and owners. Ted Misztela and Jamie Power and their team of qualify coaches

Recently worked with LB Academy in Ecuador, training junior players for world tournaments as part of an elite coaching team. Skilled in player development, coach training, event organization, and client acquisition. Holds a Bachelor’s in Physical Education from the Central University of Ecuador, ITF-endorsed coaching and fitness certifications, and a Sports Nutrition Diploma from UNIR Spain. Passionate about tennis since childhood, with a lifelong commitment to the sport.

Rish has over 5 years of experience coaching players of all levels, and with a background as a competitive player, he combines his passion for the game with a commitment to helping students improve their skills and confidence on the court. He is a graduate student from Dalhousie University, where he represented the university tennis team as Vice President, leading and organizing team activities, practices and events.

Hi I’m Matt! I’ve proudly been coaching through Headstart tennis for the past 7 years and am a certified Club Professional 1 instructor. I’ve gotten the privilege to work with all different skill levels and ages and have gained many close-knit relationships with my students over the years. Prior to my coaching days, I trained and played competitively through Headstart tennis and was committed to becoming a top-level junior within Atlantic Canada. I’m also currently enrolled at Saint Mary’s University’s Sobey School of Business and plan to graduate with a major in finance in early 2023. As a coach, I’m confident that I can provide my students with fun and enjoyable practice methods that improve their skills and help them become a more well-rounded tennis player.

Will Hardman is an undergraduate student at Dalhousie University and a standout competitive player who represented his university at the 2024 Canadian University Nationals in Montreal. Will has achieved multiple wins on the competitive circuit, including a notable victory at the Nova Scotia Open. His passion for tennis extends beyond his own play; he specializes in coaching adult programs and excels in developing junior players at all levels. Will has also led and facilitated tennis camps at Halifax Grammar School, where he is dedicated to fostering a love for the sport in young athletes and refining their skills.
